OVERLOCKER STARTER

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR OVERLOCKER (Overlocking for Beginners)

*Basic dressmaking experience is required*

This overlocking workshop is for those who have been brave enough to purchase an overlocker but haven't quite got to grips with it yet or it's actually still sat in it's box! The 1st step in getting to know your overlocker is to GET IT OUT OF THE BOX! Once you do actually get it out of the box and take the time to get to know your overlocker, you will love it just as much as your trusty sewing machine. You won't know how you ever managed without it and you will be so pleased with that professional looking finish you will want to wear garments inside out just to show them off! Practice makes perfect, so don't give up too soon, keep at it & your confidence will grow the more you use it.

What will we do:

In this session we will look at the basic anatomy of the machine, what's different about it to your sewing machine, what it can actually do and getting comfortable in starting to sew with it. You will learn how to thread it from scratch with the use of tweezers which can feel like a game of Operation but no loud buzzers! Once all threaded up and sewing correctly we will check your tensions and how to adjust depending on the types of fabrics you use. At the end of this session you will have hopefully familiarised yourselves with your own machine to then move on to one of our Overlocker Techniques Workshops.

You will need:

  • -To bring your own overlocker, with it's foot pedal (which is always useful), instruction manual (if you have one) and an overlocking tool kit (usually comes with the machine) which should include, spare needles, tweezers etc
  • -4 different colour threads to use & & feel free to bring any pieces of fabric you want to try out from your own fabric stash/planned projects (don't worry if you don't have any the basics will be supplied for the class anyway)
  • -We have the tea, coffee & biccies sorted oh and the view so feel free to bring your lunch or anything specific needed for your own dietary requirements.

Our She Shed studio is equipped with a toilet & kitchen facilities (microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge etc) & free parking on site. If attending at Fabricate Mirfield there's a carpark for up to 3 hours free parking behind the library & their studio also has a toilet & kitchen facilities (kettle, fridge)

COVERSTITCH STARTER

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR COVERSTITCH MACHINE

(Coverstitching for Beginners)

*Basic dressmaking experience is required*

This Coverstitching workshop is for those who have decided to go beyond the overlocker to complete their garments with even more of a professional finish. The overlocker and coverstitch machines are very similar and the stitch is sometimes confused as being from the same machine but they aren’t, well unless you have a combination machine that is, which allows you to switch between the two. What is the difference…a coverstitch doesn’t have a trimming blade and is mostly used for hemming, topstitching and decorative purposes whilst still allowing a garment to stretch but has a few other uses as well.

What will we do:

In this session we will look at the basic anatomy of the machine, what's different about it to your overlocker, what it can actually do and getting comfortable in starting to sew with it. You will learn how to thread it from scratch with the use of tweezers, if you’ve mastered the overlocker then this is very similar. Once all threaded up and sewing correctly we will check your settings, tensions and how to adjust depending on the types of fabrics you use. We will look at the different coverstitch seams you can achieve with your machine and any speciality stitches it will do. Hemming on the round as well as flat assembly plus any techniques to help you along.

You will need:

  • To bring your own coverstitch machine, with it's foot pedal (which is always useful), instruction manual (if you have one) and your machine tool kit which should include, spare needles, tweezers etc

  • ⅘ different colour threads to use & feel free to bring any pieces of fabric you want to try out from your own fabric stash/planned projects (don’t worry if you don’t have any, the basics will be supplied for the class anyway)

  • We have the tea, coffee & biccies sorted oh and the view so feel free to bring your lunch or anything specific needed for your own dietary requirements.

Our She Shed studio is equipped with a toilet & kitchen facilities (microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge etc) & free parking on site.
